DETROIT – The WGPR-TV Historical Society will host a benefit Friday, February 21 at the Detroit Historical Museum.
The evening of dining and music is a effort to raise funds to establish a museum at the original site of the nation's first television station owned and operated by African-Americans.

The station, which was founded by William V. Banks, went on the air in 1975, broadcasting from 3146 East Jefferson in Detroit.
Notable shows on TV 62 included "The Scene," a locally produced dance program, "Auction Movie" and "Big City News."
The station's news department helped launch the careers of many young African-American reporters, photographers and editors.
An exhibit about the history of WGPR-TV 62 is planned for the Detroit Historical Museum in 2016.
