DETROIT – It looks like Macy's might be giving into peer pressure this holiday season. The company has confirmed most of its stores will open nationwide at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening.
More and more retailers have started opening their doors on the actual Thanksgiving holiday. While Macy's opened stores at midnight on Black Friday, they've been closed on the actual holiday for 155 years. Retailers have faced increased competition on that first official weekend of the holiday
shopping season.
Other big retailers like Walmart, Toys R Us, Target, Sears, and Kmart already opening their doors at some time in the evening on Thanksgiving, and then stay open through Black Friday.
Macy's is promising limited-time special in every department to lure holiday shoppers into its stores on Thanksgiving night.
"Black Friday is the biggest shopping event of the year and brings with it a level of fun and excitement to our customers around the nation," said Peter Sachse, Macy's chief stores officer. "For Macy's, it's important to make this day enjoyable and convenient for everyone, as our customers search for great deals on favorite wish-list items. Shopping at Macy's on Black Friday means having the opportunity to purchase the most sought-after products at unbelievable savings."
Macy's says it hopes to minimize the impact on its employees who might want the holiday off. It's working with its associated to allow some workers to volunteer for the shifts they'd like to work during the busy holiday shopping season.
