DETROIT –
With gas prices trending lower this year, maybe it's time to start thinking about the quality of the gasoline you pump into your vehicle.
AAA has released new research on gasoline quality, not the grade (premium, regular, etc.).
AAA performed lab tests comparing what's called TOP TIER gasoline to other types of gas. Fuels that meet TOP TIER standards contain engine-cleaning detergent additives. The agency's research found the non-TOP TIER gasoline caused 19 times more engine deposits -- which can reduce fuel economy, increase emissions, and negatively impact vehicle performance.
"AAA was surprised to learn the extent to which detergent additives impact gasoline quality," said Kevin Bakewell, senior vice president and chief public affairs officer for AAA. "This study does not suggest that using non-TOP TIER fuel will damage your vehicle. However, results clearly show that engines running on TOP TIER gasoline will operate at their optimal level."
AAA also found most Americans do not make gas quality a priority. Seventy-five percent of U.S drivers say they choose a gas station based on location and 73 percent say they purchase based on price. The TOP TIER gasoline costs about three cents extra per gallon on average.
