Birmingham family gets $8K hospital bill after daughter was transported in ambulance during RSV treatment

Birmingham family was hit with an outrageous bill after their daughter was transported in an ambulance for a 15-mile ride down I-75.

The Birmingham couple had no idea that when their daughter was transported from DMC Children’s Hospital in Troy to Children’s Hospital in Detroit, it could cost them almost $8,000 out of pocket.

They quickly realized they were not the only ones involved in the situation.

Baby Bella was being treated for RSV last September at Children’s Hospital.

Thankfully, on Monday (Oct. 23), she fully recovered; the worry now for her family is the massive medical bill left behind.

It was a non-emergency transport by Superior Ambulance. The roughly 20-minute drive was uneventful. There were no flashing lights, no urgent lifesaving emergency care provided, just a ride in the ambulance.

The family has Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, and Blue Cross is no longer affiliated with Superior, hence the massive amount owed.

However, the family was never told in advance and was never given another transport option. They had no idea they would be on the hook for almost $8,000.
