DETROIT – A contract switch has led to garbage piling up on curbs throughout Metro Detroit.
Background: Trash pickup delays plague Metro Detroit communities
The switch, effective July 1, was from GLF Waste -- which many people have used for years -- to Priority Waste. It was expected there might be some disruptions in service, but the problems were compounded when Priority apparently took on some of GFL’s equipment, including aging trucks that had issues. Those trucks are being repaired and are now starting to get out on the road.
People from all over Metro Detroit -- including Highland Park, Ann Arbor, West Bloomfield, Canton and more -- have been reporting that their garbage has been sitting out for days. Some viewers have said they’ve had no trash pickup in two or three weeks.
Priority Waste said they are keeping track of the trash across Metro Detroit that has and hasn’t been picked up. They said the delays are expected to get smaller as they get through their backlog.
If you’re still seeing trash on the curb and wondering when your house will get picked up, Local 4 has been told the majority of the trucks are being repaired and are getting back on the road. Trash pickup is expected to happen this week and if it doesn’t, residents are urged to contact Priority Waste immediately to let them know where so they can get a crew out there to take care of the problem.
