Trash collection issues continue to plague Metro Detroit

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Trash pickup problems across Metro Detroit are still growing.

The first issues started when Priority Waste took over GLF Waste’s customers -- and the backlog was big. GLF Waste -- which had the contract to pick up trash in many communities all over the area -- sold its residential arm of the company to Priority Waste, a change that was official on July 1.

While progress has been made, there are still some big issues.

Jill Colfer has had enough. She said her trash has been piling up for weeks, ever since Priority Waste took over trash pickup.

“It’s very frustrating,” Colfer said. “But, again, we’re at their mercy.”

The transition from GFL has not been a smooth one. Priority has blamed a fleet of trucks they inherited and said they were in desperate need of repair.

The good news is that every customer has had at least one trash pickup.

The bad news is that some trucks are still out of service.

A lot of progress has been made. The biggest issue for most people involves yard waste and recycling.

Priority Waste is trying to get a handle on it, but there are still some issues.

If you’re still seeing trash on the curb and wondering when your house will get picked up, residents are urged to contact Priority Waste immediately to let them know where so they can get a crew out there to take care of the problem.

You can contact Priority on its official website.
