DETROIT – What a difference four years makes. I was in Huntington Place during the chaos of 2020.
It was a wild and concerning scene. There were accusations that ballots were being hidden, stolen, and tossed out (none of that proved to be true), and it didn’t take long for a large crowd to take over the lower level of this convention space.
What happened there made headlines around the world. A lot of work went into planning the setup for the 2024 election.
We’ve moved from the lower level (where we were in 2020) to the main floor.
It was unavailable in 2020 because this space was filled with COVID beds.
Remember COVID? It seems like a bit of a distant memory, but at the time, much of Huntington Place was set up as a vaccine hub or as a temporary hospital, if needed.
There are now two layers of security to even get into this space. Having said that, challengers (who are properly credentialed) are welcome to watch the process.
We all want a fair, safe, and secure election. On Tuesday (Nov. 5), I spoke with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, and Detroit police Chief James White, and we heard from Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. We are all so pleased with the turnout and the process.
As a bonus, we had a nice (yet windy) day, which hopefully encouraged more people to vote. Detroit is getting much attention right now, and we are all. We are all surrounded by local, national, and international media.
No matter who gets elected, be proud, Michigan—a huge turnout and so far a big success!
