Hank Winchester: Tips to keeping your Thanksgiving costs down

Are you busy shopping for Thanksgiving staples this week? We have some good news. The overall price is down.

In fact, here are some numbers. For a 10-person gathering, you could expect to spend about $58.08 for 10 guests or $5.81 a head -- prices have dropped 5% since last year. The turkey is 20% less, and so are some staples like potatoes, but you will spend more on eggs.

Egg prices are soaring. Supply is low, demand is high and worries about bird flu are causing an increase in what we pay.

We also learned pie filling prices have jumped about 15%. It may be cheaper to buy a pie than make one from scratch.
