Target testing free curbside 'drive-up' service at select stores

1962: The first Target discount store opens in Roseville, Minnesota. By the end of 1962, four more stores would open in Minnesota.

DETROIT – Target is launching a new service for those days, as they say, "you don't want to get out of the car."

The retail giant announced last week they would begin testing a new drive-up service, allowing customers to order though the Target app, and pick up products outside stores.

The service is not available in the Detroit area yet, but it is being tested at Minneapolis and St. Paul stores.

“Stopping for diapers and toilet paper may not be glamorous, but it’s still on a lot of our to-do lists,” said Dawn Block, Target senior vice president of digital. “Drive Up is our latest effort to make it easier and faster for busy guests to conveniently get what they need, and simply get back to their day.”

Here's more from Target:

Everyone loves a good I-came-in-for-toothpaste-and-I’m-leaving-with-throw-pillows Target Run. But some days are just too busy to even consider leaving the car. That’s why Target is introducing Drive Up, a test service now available in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area that allows guests to have their orders brought out to their cars by a store team member.

Here’s how it works: After placing an order in the Target app and selecting “Drive Up,” Target will notify guests when the order is ready to be picked up. Guests hit the “I’m on My Way” button when they are en route to their store. They pull into designated parking spots out front, and soon a Target team member comes out to greet them with their order.

After testing Drive Up among select Target team members this summer, the free service is now available to guests at stores throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul area who use the latest version of the Target app on an iPhone. Through Drive Up, guests can shop nearly 200,000 eligible items—including home furnishings, toys, electronics, household essentials, non-perishable food, baby-care items and more.

Built in house by Target, Drive Up is the latest example of Target using its stores as hubs to help guests shop Target on their own terms. It’s a test-and-learn program, so we’ll continue to fine-tune and enhance the experience, and will look to expand to more guests in the future.
