United States representative from Michigan Elissa Slotkin has secured a third term in office, defeating Republican opponent state Sen. Tom Barrett in the general election, the AP projects.
Slotkin has served the state’s 8th congressional district for two terms, but was moved to the 7th district due to redistricting. The race between Slotkin and Barrett, the Republican state senator for Michigan’s 24th state senate district, was so tight it was considered a toss-up ahead of Election Day.

Prior to serving as a U.S. Michigan rep., Slotkin previously worked in the U.S. State Department, the CIA and the Defense Department.
Barrett was among a group of Michigan Republican state lawmakers who met with former President Donald Trump in Washington after the 2020 election, and then signed a letter asking Congress to delay certifying the election results. Slotkin had been a vocal proponent of the formation of the House Jan. 6 committee, which was created following the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
In early October, the race between Slotkin and Barrett was reportedly the most expensive House race in the U.S. The 2022 race in Michigan’s 7th congressional district was one of the GOP’s top targets in their campaign to win the House majority in this election.
