New poll shows where Michigan voters stand in Trump-Harris race

Survey shows tight race with 2 months before election

A new WDIV/Detroit News survey asked Michigan voters where they stand on the race for president between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Harris was officially nominated by the Democratic Party on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, after President Joe Biden pulled out of the race in July.

The WDIV/Detroit News survey was conducted between Aug. 26 and Aug. 29, 2024.


The Trump-Harris race for president

The WDIV/Detroit News survey found the presidential race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris is very close, a statistical toss-up.

Donald Trump leads 44.7%-43.5% among likely voters. 4.7% of voters back Kennedy. 2.3% of voters choose another third- party option. 4.8% of voters remain undecided. Here’s the breakdown:

The race shifts when you look at the 91% of voters that say they are definite voters. Among definite voters Harris holds a 1.6% lead over Trump.

Favorability

Donald Trump is viewed favorably by 42.3% of voters and unfavorably by 51.3% of voters. 6.2% of voters have no opinion of him. These numbers are statistically unchanged from July 2024 when he was viewed favorably by 39.8% and unfavorably by 52.4%.

Kamala Harris is viewed favorably by 43.3% of voters and unfavorably by 49.7% of voters. 6.7% of voters have no opinion of her. These numbers represent a shift from July 2024 when she was viewed favorably by just 37.1% and unfavorably by 47.8%.

Poll methodology

The Glengariff Group, Inc. conducted a Michigan statewide survey of November 2024 likely general election voters. The 600 sample, live operator telephone survey was conducted on August 26-29, 2024 and has a margin of error of +/-4.0% with a 95% level of confidence. 16.6% of respondents were contacted via landline telephone. 83.4% of respondents were contacted via cell phone telephone. This survey was commissioned by WDIV Local 4 News and the Detroit News.
