A majority of Michigan voters support an immediate cease fire between Israel and Hamas in exchange for the release of hostages.
The WDIV/Detroit News survey was conducted between Aug. 26 and Aug. 29, 2024. The survey found that a majority of voters support the U.S. providing military assistance to Ukraine, want the U.S. to remain a member of the NATO alliance, and believe that Israel’s response to the Hamas terrorist attack has gone too far.
Here are some of the key findings on international affairs:
Israel’s response to Hamas attack
Michigan voters were asked if they support or oppose an immediate cease fire between Israel and Hamas in exchange for the release of hostages. The survey found that 72.5% support an immediate cease fire in exchange for the release of hostages, and 11.9% oppose an immediate cease fire in exchange for the release of hostages.

- 14.7% Somewhat support
- 4.9% Somewhat oppose
- 7.0% Strongly oppose
- 15.6% Neither/ Neutral/ Don’t Know/ Refused
Michigan voters were also asked if they would say that Israel’s response to the Hamas terrorist attack has been about right, has gone too far, or has not gone far enough.
- 21.5% said Israel’s response to the Hamas terrorist attack has been about right.
- 40.1% said Israel’s response to the Hamas terrorist attack has gone too far.
- 14.7% said Israel’s response to the Hamas terrorist attack has not gone far enough.
- 23.8% were undecided / other.
US role in Ukraine
Michigan voters were asked if they support or oppose the United States providing military assistance to Ukraine in its war with Russia. The survey found that 52.1% support providing military assistance to Ukraine and 37.2% oppose providing military assistance to Ukraine.

NATO alliance
NATO is a security alliance of 30 nations from North America and Europe and includes the United States.
Michigan voters were asked if they support or oppose the United States remaining a member of the NATO alliance. The survey found that 76.5% support the U.S. remaining a member of the NATO alliance and 12.1% oppose the U.S. remaining a member of the NATO alliance.

Poll methodology
The Glengariff Group, Inc. conducted a Michigan statewide survey of November 2024 likely general election voters. The 600 sample, live operator telephone survey was conducted on August 26-29, 2024 and has a margin of error of +/-4.0% with a 95% level of confidence. 16.6% of respondents were contacted via landline telephone. 83.4% of respondents were contacted via cell phone telephone. This survey was commissioned by WDIV Local 4 News and the Detroit News.
