ROCHESTER, Mich. – We’ve never experienced an election season like the one we’re marching through right now, and wow -- it can be exhausting.
We’re all having conversations (or maybe even dodging them!) about politics with our friends and family, and especially on social media.
Here at Local 4, we thought it would be valuable to have an open forum about some of the biggest issues people are talking about right now in Michigan. So we partnered with Oakland University’s Center for Civic Engagement to have a series of three town halls this fall. It’s called “Decision 2024: Your Vote.”
Our first one is Tuesday, and we’re taking on the topic of misinformation, social media, and trust in politics. Everywhere you turn we’re being hit with immediate information: We’re consuming ads, stories, stats, and videos that are all trying to sway us one way or another.
In many cases, misinformation is being repeated over and over as fact. How has this changed the way we vote and who we trust? What role do candidates play in misinformation? And how can we separate the fact from the fiction?
We’re going to talk about it all with Oakland University professor of political science Dave Dulio (Flashpoint watchers, he’s a frequent guest!) and communications Professor Erin Meyers (she specializes in social media analysis). And of course, with you!
The event is open to the public. Go to the Oakland Center Winter Garden (312 Meadowbrook Drive in Rochester) and we’ll be in the southeast corner of the building.
If you can’t join us in person, you can watch live on Local 4+, starting at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
See you then!
