Have you seen people on trails power-walking with ski poles in their hands and wondered what they were doing? They were Nordic walking.
Nordic walking is walking with poles, according to the Cross Country Ski Areas Association.
This allows the walker to enjoy a total-body workout. It’s low impact enough to reduce joint strain and muscle fatigue, but it’s more of a workout than just walking. Adding the poles adds the upper body into the workout, allowing Nordic walkers to burn more calories.
The poles also provide additional balance to Nordic walkers and can be used to help them maneuver across potentially slippery terrain, rocks and hills.
Nordic walking is a great way for cross-country skiers to stay in shape in the off-season, and is also a great activity for those who enjoy walking, running and hiking.
