Michigan State University students in professor Robert Schutzki's horticulture classes created designs specifically for the DeKeyser students.

The designs were submitted to the DeKeyser landscaping committee based on five criteria:

· Kid-friendly
· Plants native to MI
· Low maintenance
· Hardy
· Cost-effective

The landscaping committee was comprised of DeKeyser students, staff, parents and Lowe's employees. They all provided guidance to narrow down designs received from MSU students.

At the school's 40th birthday party, DeKeyser students voted for their favorites.
