An ode to the 2000s: Moody's Point on 'The Amanda Show'

You just wouldn't understand!

DETROIT – Dawson had a creek. Moody has a point.

"Moody's Point" was a parody show developed inside Nickelodeon's "The Amanda Show" that was inspired by the TV drama, "Dawson's Creek." It aired around 2001.

The over-the-top dramatic teen soap starred Amanda Bynes as Moody, along with Lauren Petty, Molly Orr, and Taran Killam, who made up her hilariously dramatic group of friends. Killam plays Spalding, Moody's friend-zoned male friend who constantly tries to get out of the friend zone. Matthew Botuchis plays Sternum, a dreamy, leather jacket wearing senior who Moody melts for.

The show's plot centered around Moody's tough life as a teen who lost her mother in a hot air balloon and whose father is missing a toe. "Moody! Help me, Moody!  I'm still aloft in this hot-air balloon! Can anyone hear me?" In the pilot episode, we meet Moody and her friends. The writing for this show is spectacular, and extremely witty for a children's show. "Sweetheart, if wishes were omelets, we'd all be filled with cheese and small pieces of ham."

The absurdity of the plot lines made "Moody's Point" a hidden gem in an already popular series of sketches and bits on "The Amanda Show." We already had Judge Trudy (bring in the dancing lobsters), Blockblister, the girl's room and of course, Penelope Taynt. Moody's Point stood on its own level -- it's a shame it was never a full spin-off. Wait, why wasn't it a spin-off?

Show producer Dan Schneider actually addressed this in a blog some years ago. Here's an excerpt:

"When The Amanda Show was canceled, Moody's Point ended with it.  That's why we'll never know who the real Moody was.  Even I don't know – because I never had the opportunity to sit down and write it. I'll always feel a little sad that Moody's Point ended without resolution – and sadder that it never became a full-fledged TV series (sort of a spin-off of The Amanda Show)."

"Anyway, I feel pretty sure that if we had made Moody's Point into a real TV series, it would have been really popular– especially because it starred Taran Killam who's now one of the funniest stars of Saturday Night Live (and an incredibly nice guy)."

Spoiler alert -- the show ends with a big cliffhanger. We find out Moody isn't really Moody, and that she was switched at birth. But with only seven spectacular episodes, we're left wanting more.
