If you’re wondering how filmmakers got permission to do this to these characters -- turns out, they didn’t need it. A.A. Milne’s original “Winnie the Pooh” stories lapsed into the public domain at the start of this year. The Disney version, however, is still under copyright law.
Director Rhys Waterfield told Variety that they swapped Winnie’s red shirt for lumberjack gear and left Tigger out of the movie to get around any potential issues.
