It wasn’t until after the sixth song during MUNA’s nearly sold-out show at the Majestic Theater in Detroit Tuesday night that I looked at my friend and mouthed the word, “Wow,” because that was all I could say.
The band’s self-titled third album was released over the summer to rave reviews. After perfecting a blend of synth-y pop and catchy hooks, MUNA added in more rock and country elements to their new album, and the results were magical.

Lead singles “Silk Chiffon” and “What I Want” proved the band could write a song that you want to sing/scream along with at the top of your lungs, but hearing these songs live and in person was a whole other experience.
The packed theater was buzzing before the trio came out, and it was instant screams and joy as Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson strutted their way onto the stage. Adorning fans (myself included) were absolutely ready to rage their faces off.
While some bands may start a set list off nice and easy to build up the crowd, MUNA know their fans better. They opened with arguably the most hype song on their new album “What I Want,” followed by old favorite “Number One Fan” and then a string of new songs “Solid,” “Runner’s High” and “No Idea.” These songs are my absolute favorites from the new album.
Not only did MUNA sound (and look) incredible throughout the evening, they were charming and funny while bantering between songs. You can tell that they spend a ton of time with each other, and genuinely are good friends. They almost have a sibling vibe where they can poke fun at one another in good fun.
Their hits from their previous two albums blended perfectly into the set list, and a surprise cover of “Mr. Brightside” by the Killers was the cherry on top. You want to get a crowd hyped up? Play a cover of a beloved song that was popular in high school. MUNA truly cracked the code.
If MUNA is coming to a city near you, I highly recommend catching their show. From the insane vocals, random bits of choreography to the all-out dance party that was had by all, it was a fantastic night of live music.
