It’s not every day that you get to perform in a touring production of a Broadway musical in your hometown, and on the same stage that you used to see touring Broadway shows at. But for Metro Detroiter Maya Petropoulos, she’s living that dream right now.

Petropoulos is starring at Regina George is the touring company of Broadway’s “Mean Girls.” Regina George is an iconic character, and she has some pretty big shoes to fill considering Rachel McAdams made the character famous back in the 2004 movie.

After seeing Petropoulos in the show, I can say she absolutely delivers. Not only does she embody Regina George, but she has the acting chops and voice to wow an audience. We caught up with her to ask some questions on what it’s like to be stepping into such a memorable show.

Q: What does it feel like to step into such an iconic role like Regina George?

Petropoulos: It honestly can feel a bit intimidating. At first, I felt all of this pressure on me to deliver all the little bits of her that people love. But after I realized that all I truly needed to do was deliver my truest and most authentic version of this character, that voice quieted. I really try to just focus on having fun with her. She is very layered and I feel like I can always find something new with her.

Q: How does it feel to be performing in Detroit? Is it strange to be back home, or is this something you’ve always dreamed of?

Petropoulos: It’s something I’ve dreamed of my entire life. I grew up seeing shows here and wondered what it would feel like to take a bow on that stage. It felt so far away back then. All I want to do is make my family and my community proud. It is an honor that I will never ever forget. One of the most special moments of my life.

Q: Is there anywhere around Metro Detroit you want to visit on your trip home?

Petropoulos: My house, ha! But really, when you’re traveling mostly every day on tour all you really want to do is be home. I’m so grateful I get to be home with my family while we are here.

Q: What is your connection to Mean Girls like? Did you grow up watching the movie?

Petropoulos: I grew up absolutely obsessed with the original film. It was the event at every sleepover and every hangout. I remember when the press release came out about the musical and I followed it closely since then.

Q: The movie (and show) is just so quotable? Do you have a favorite quote that you repeat all the time? Mine is “Your mom’s chest hair!”

Petropoulos: I might have to agree with you. Janis has so many funny zingers!! I also love Janis’s “and soak up each other’s awesomeness.” It’s just so silly.

Q: What can people expect to see form the show who have never seen it, but are familiar with the source material?

Petropoulos: The musical has everything you love about the original film, expanded into the magical world of musical theatre. The costumes, the set, and music, and the talent shine so bright to amplify the story in such a fun way. It’s the best time!

“Mean Girls” is playing at the Fisher Theatre from Nov. 17-24.
