DETROIT – Detroit was once the largest metropolitan area without surface transit, but that's all about to change.
Matt Cullen, volunteer president and CEO of the M1-Rail streetcar initiative reveals the look of the new QLine which will be coming to Detroit.
On this week's Flashpoint, Cullen revealed the new QLine will be fully completed by late November and said the new streetcars will dramatically change Woodward for the better.
"Totally rebuilt Woodward, with all new infrastructure, new street lights and utilities . We’ll have wireless and all these activities on” Cullen said of the new transportation method coming to the city.
“We expect businesses to expand dramatically.”
Cullen revealed the look of the new, sleek, modern QLine streetcars to Local 4 this morning.
The surface rail transit line will span 3.3 miles (6.6 miles round trip) to connect the city's largest cultural institutions, schools, employment centers and entertainment venues along Woodward Avenue.
Cullen said the new method of transportation, which is driven by human drivers, is pedestrian friendly, and was built to provide a "hop on, hop off' type of experience.
In regards to the months of construction that led toward the completion of the project, Cullen said it will pay off in the end.
“The worst is over," Cullen said. "Within a month, or six weeks, we will be done with construction.”
The first set of cars will arrive on Woodward by the middle of October, and the project will officially begin running in November.
