Whitmer, Pritzker argue about Detroit vs. Chicago style pizza. We all know the winner.

Let’s not pretend Chicago-style pizza is good

DETROIT – In the battle royale of best pizza styles, one definitely wins. And another is basically pie.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker have been enjoying some witty banter about pizza on X this week, after Whitmer attended an event in Chicago, and posted a video asking where to find the best Detroit-style pizza in the city.

Pritzker quipped that Whitmer had to travel 300 miles to get better pizza. Whitmer fired back with, “We’ve got room on the way back if you want to see some winning sports teams.”

Yeah, the Bears are trash. We can all agree on that.

But when comparing Detroit and Chicago pizza, there’s a clear winner, and that’s obviously Detroit-style. It’s not even close.

Chicago-style is arguably not even pizza. It’s like a pizza-themed casserole masquerading as a pizza. It’s like if apple pie was accidentally dropped in a vat of tomato sauce and the baker said, eh, this’ll work.

It’s a soupy, bready, heavy mess.

But don’t take my word for it -- ask Jon Stewart, who in 2013, called Chicago-style pizza “an above-ground marinara swimming pool for rats.”

Okay, that’s a bit harsh, but for my argument’s sake, I’ll accept it.

Enter, Detroit-style. Crispy, fluffy, perfectly balanced on sauce, cheese and toppings of your choice.

There’s nothing quite like a fresh-out-the-oven Detroit-style grid of lovingly cut square slices. The cheesy edges sizzling, slightly burnt, holding everything in place, for the perfect bite.

Listen, if you love Chicago-style pizza, live your best life. Don’t let anyone tell you which pizza to eat and love. It’s your pizza, live it to the fullest.

But when you put down your knife and fork, just know, I’ll be enjoying a beautiful corner at Michigan & Trumbull.
