Doctor shares tips for staying healthy as kids head back to school

Don’t sneeze into your hands

A top infectious disease doctor is sharing tips for a healthy back-to-school season.

“All the kids are going to be packed together in rooms in very close contact and spreading germs among each other,” said Dr. Matthew Sims, director of Infectious Diseases Research at Corewell Health.

His back-to-school health tips are simple and straight forward.

“Number one: get everybody their childhood vaccines,” he said. “If they’re not up to date, get them up to date.”

“Number two: make sure they get their seasonal vaccines; flu (and) covid. These are important things, covid is still an issue.”

Sims said the covid vaccinations will also help protect the adults and elderly people in your family as kids have been known to bring the virus home with them.

His other health tips include good hand washing and staying home if you’re sick.

He also suggests coughing or sneezing in the crook of your elbow, not in your hands.
