What’s Going Around: COVID, seasonal allergies, wasp stings, insect bites, seasonal allergies

Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.

Wayne County – COVID, seasonal allergies, wasp stings, insect bites

Dr. Asha Shajahan -- Primary Care Physician, Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital

“In addition to increasing incidence of COVID, patients are battling seasonal allergies. I also continue to see increased incidence of alcoholism in female patients in their 40s and 50s, tracking back to the start of the pandemic.”

Oakland County – COVID, seasonal allergies, wasp stings, RSV, mononucleosis, upper respiratory infections, pneumonia

Dr. Rena Daiza -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Bloomfield Twp.

“This week, I have seen a few cases of pneumonia. A reminder that upper respiratory infections can settle in the chest and cause pneumonia. It’s important to be up to date on vaccinations, including pneumonia for specific patient populations and the latest COVID and flu vaccinations. Those are the best defense against those infections.“

Dr. David Donaldson -- Emergency Center Chief, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital

“In children, we are seeing more cases of RSV. Overall, COVID cases continue to rise. We are also seeing adult mononucleosis.”

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, Emergency Department

“We are seeing a lot of respiratory issues, abdominal pain with vomiting, and chest pain.”

Washtenaw County – COVID, asthma flare-ups, seasonal allergies, respiratory viruses, influenza, seasonal allergies

University of Michigan Health

“Lots of COVID with more incidental COVID diagnoses than last week. Some COVID patients have been requiring admission, especially those with underlying lung problems. There has also been a lot of asthma or asthma-like illnesses, likely triggered by typical respiratory viruses.”

Chelsea Hospital

“Chelsea is still seeing an uptick in COVID.”

Washtenaw County Health Department

Influenza cases in Washtenaw County residents are currently at low levels. Sporadic cases of influenza A and influenza B are being reported. Most influenza cases being reported in Washtenaw county are influenza B. Influenza wastewater detection is currently at low levels in both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.”

Monroe County – Respiratory illnesses, stomach viruses, seasonal allergies, wasp stings, insect bites

ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital – Emergency Center

“We are seeing patients coming in with respiratory symptoms and gastrointestinal symptoms.”

Macomb County – COVID, seasonal allergies, breathing problems, wasp & bee stings

Dr. Joseph Flynn -- Emergency physician at McLaren Macomb

“Patients are still presenting with symptoms mirroring an upper respiratory infection (fever, cough, and sore throat) but testing positive for COVID-19. Increased bee and wasp activity has caused many patients to seek care for complications from a sting. Allergy-related breathing complications continue to be treated in high volumes. Pleasant late-summer weather and outdoor activities, including high school athletics, have resulted in many patients seeking care for soft tissue and orthopedic injuries.”

Dr. Maria Samuel -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Sterling Heights

“Right now, COVID and fall allergies are most prevalent.”

Livingston County -- COVID, stomach viruses, seasonal allergies

Trinity Health Livingston Emergency Department

“We have been seeing some COVID cases and viral GI.”
