What’s Going Around: RSV, Viruses, asthma, allergies, COVID

Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.

WAYNE COUNTY – RSV, respiratory infections, pneumonia, mycoplasma pneumonia.

Dr. Sarah Leluga -- Pediatrician, Children’s Hospital of Michigan

“We’re starting to see more RSV and various other respiratory infections, as well as a lot of pneumonia, including mycoplasma. There isn’t a vaccine for children for pneumonia, but we are really suggesting the Beyfortus vaccine for RSV to prevent severe infections, or RSV turning into pneumonia. The recommendation is for infants under the age of 1 or toddlers under 2 if they are high risk. Otherwise, wash those hands, mask if needed and anyone sick should stay home.”

Dr. Asha Shajahan -- Primary Care Physician, Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital

“We’ve seen a few cases of community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly -- don’t forget to get vaccinated. Many are coming in due to weight gain and inability to get weight loss injectables due to cost. I’ve also seen a lot of kids coming in for well-child visits.”

OAKLAND COUNTY – Respiratory viruses, croup, mycoplasma pneumonia, hand foot & mouth disease, asthma & allergy flare-ups.

Dr. Whitney Minnock -- Pediatric Chief of Emergency, Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak

“We’ve seen a lot of respiratory viruses, croup, mycoplasma pneumonia, and hand, foot, and mouth disease. With the weather change, we have also seen a lot of asthmatics coming into the hospital.”

Dr. Rena Daiza -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Bloomfield Twp.

“With changing weather patterns, we have observed an increase in asthma and allergy flare-ups among our patients. If the standard treatment regimen, including anti-allergy medications and inhalers, isn’t providing the expected relief, we recommend testing for possible infections.”

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital Emergency Department

“We’re seeing a lot of generalized pain, respiratory issues, and falls this week.”

WASHTENAW COUNTY – Upper respiratory infections, Covid, stomach viruses, influenza, asthma & allergy flare-ups.

Dr. Brad Uren -- Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Michigan Medicine

“This week there are a few more COVID positive URIs than last week, though we continue to see COVID negative URIs. We also continue to see low to moderate levels of GI illnesses.”

Washtenaw County Health Department

“Influenza cases in Washtenaw County residents are currently at low levels. Sporadic cases of influenza A and influenza B are being reported. Most influenza cases being reported in Washtenaw county are influenza B. Influenza wastewater detection is currently at low levels in both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.”

MONROE COUNTY – Respiratory viruses, colds, flu-like illnesses, breathing problems.

ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital Emergency Center

“We are seeing patients coming in with cold and flu symptoms, shortness of breath and abdominal pain.”

MACOMB COUNTY – Upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, respiratory viruses, Covid, seasonal allergies.

Dr. Evan Coyne -- Emergency Physician at McLaren Macomb

“There has been a significant increase in patients experiencing symptoms of cough, congestion, sore throat, and slight fever from an upper respiratory infection, though patients are not testing positive for COVID-19, influenza, or RSV. With symptoms of persistent cough, fever, and difficulty breathing, there has been a noticeable increase in children diagnosed with pneumonia. Though activity-related orthopedic and soft tissue injuries continue to be treated in high volumes, there are signs its prevalence is tapering off.”

LIVINGSTON COUNTY -- Coughs, colds, respiratory viruses, asthma & allergy flare-ups.

Trinity Health Livingston and Brighton Medical Center Emergency Departments

“We are seeing lot of viral illness-cough/cold symptoms.”
