4 strategies to improve digestion

Sick of acid reflux? Check out these tips!

Having indigestion can ruin your day, or even keep you up at night.

If you are looking for relief, we spoke with Dr. Geri Williams, one of the experts at Ideal You, to get a few simple steps you can take to reduce acid reflux, increase your metabolism, and improve your overall health.

Now, most people turn to anti-acids when they have some acid reflux. According to Dr. Williams, however, these pills typically make us feel better in the immediate, but they are not a good solution for the long-term.

Antacids work by reducing stomach acid, and in the long term, this can affect how your body digests and absorbs nutrients from proteins. So, Dr. Williams recommends using these strategies instead to improve digestion.

1) Chew your food more thoroughly.

Dr. Williams says 20 chews per bite is a minimum.

2) Sit down and focus on eating.

Mealtime is not a time to multitask.

3) Don’t drink lots of fluids with meals.

Dr. Williams puts the cap at 8 oz. of fluid while eating. If you drink more than that, you could make digestion worse.

4) Don’t eat within 3 hours of bedtime.

“Your body should be preparing for sleep, not digesting food at that time,” said Dr. Williams.

If you are not digesting properly, you will have a harder time losing weight. You will also suffer from things like bloating, inflammation and sometimes fat storage.
