Horse racing, animation, and blooming flowers are what’s happening around the D

Check out these fun events happening this weekend

We know you may already have your plans for Mother’s Day this weekend, but there are plenty of other things happening around Detroit.

Let’s start with the Kentucky Derby which is Saturday and airs right here on Local 4. There are two events that are bringing the festivities of the big race to town including the Derby Day in Detroit. This happens in the Chevy Plaza and Budweiser Biergarten outside Little Caesars Arena. You can walk the red carpet, join in the best ladies’ hat contest, or men’s best dressed contest. There will also be live music. The event is for people 21 and over, and runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m..

There’s also Detroit Kentucky Derby Day happening at Music Hall Amphitheater. There you can watch the race, dance along to live music, and snap photos in your best dressed outfits. This event also happens Saturday and runs from 4p.m. to 9 p.m..

If horse racing isn’t your thing, maybe animation is. The Detroit International Festival of Animation returns this year where you can enjoy nearly 90 minutes of animated shorts from local, national, and international artists. The show will take place on Saturday at the Senate Theater in Detroit, and tickets cost 10 dollars. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m..

Over in Mt. Clemens, the “Made in Michigan” show happens this Friday and Saturday. Here you can see specialty made items from artisans both local and from across the state. Also, on Saturday the Kids Business Fair will happen on Cherry Street as part of the event. You can “shop local” and maybe find something special for mom.

Speaking of mom, on Mother’s Day you can buy her some fresh flowers for her garden at the annual Royal Oak in Bloom event. This happens in the parking lots near Main Street and Sixth in downtown. Here you can find everything from hanging baskets, to annuals, to bouquets. It runs this Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m..
