Three new movies for the last weekend of summer

A drama, documentary and comedy offer something for everyone

An Academy Award winner is back on the big screen this weekend in a movie that is right now rated nearly 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Movie Reviewer Greg Russell joined co-host Jason Carr for Reel Talk to chat about that and two other new movies.

The film “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, is getting a lot of attention and may even be nominated for an Oscar. The movie is based on a true story about women warriors who banded together on the West coast of Africa in the 1700s and 1800s to protect their land because there weren’t many men around. Russell gives this movie four and a half reels out of five and says this is a movie everyone should see, especially women, because it is empowering.

Next, Russell discussed the new Detroit-based documentary “Boblo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale,” which is narrated by Motown legend Martha Reeves. Russell says that if you grew up in Detroit and went to Boblo, you will love this because it tells the history of the boats and is full of memories for Detroiters. Russell gives this film four reels and says there is a clip from “Live in the D” in the documentary.

Finally, the cast of the upcoming film “See How They Run” features two Oscar winners and a four-time nominee. According to Russell, he hears this is a movie rendition of the game Clue.
