These nutrition facts will give you “pumpkin” to talk about

Did you know pumpkin is a fruit?

Pumpkin season is in full swing! Jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin spice lattes are great, but have you thought about the nutritional benefits of pumpkins? Nutrition and fitness expert Jody Trierweiler joined Jason Carr on “Live in the D” to explain the benefits of including this fruit in meals.

According to Trierweiler, pumpkin has incredible health benefits.

“Pumpkin has something in it called beta carotene that turns it orange and makes it this color, and that turns into Vitamin A in our body and in combination with some other nutrients, it’s really excellent for your eye health,” said Trierweiler.

The more beta carotene consumed, lessens the chance of developing glaucoma or macular degeneration, according to Trierweiler.

The average pumpkin contains 500 seeds, which also contain healthy nutrients.

“Pumpkin seeds are equally as nutritious,” said Trierweiler. “You’ve got twenty nutrients in the pumpkin seeds: vitamins, minerals, all of that.”
