What’s in your bowl? 🥣

May 3, 2023: The Buzz from ‘Live in the D’

From Tati Amare – I had a conversation with my guest host Hobie Artique this week that is still coming up in the office. Tuesday we asked our Couch Club what their favorite cereal is... we all gave our individual opinions and that should have been it. Then, Michelle Oliver insists that oatmeal is, in fact, cereal. (I’m still working on changing her mind.) What??? How is warm morning porridge considered cereal? Apparently, there is some overly specific description of cereal online and somehow oatmeal narrowly manages to fall into that category. But I beg to differ....

Cereal is a multi-faceted wonder meal that can be so many things. It can be an appetizer, it can be the main course (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), it can be dessert, or just the perfect snack. It’s the center of childhood memories on weekend mornings, and even used to come with a prize! Who remembers digging through a box of cereal for the toy at the bottom of the box? I’m sorry, my good friends, but oatmeal just doesn’t evoke the same feelings. Though, oatmeal does have its place... filled with cinnamon, brown sugar and maybe some fruit or nuts, it can be the perfect start to a chilly fall or winter day. It sticks to your bones and leaves you will a full belly to conquer the day. BUT, in my humble opinion, it will never rise to the level of a bowl of crispy cereal with ice cold milk of your choosing.

🌄 There are plenty of places you can go across the country and visit amazing state parks, but there is one in Michigan that’s getting some national attention thanks to Outside magazine.

🗞️ It’s something you’re used to having delivered to your door every week, but soon it’s going to be a thing of the past and you’ll only get it on your phone. Are you ready for this change?

Derby Hats by Rachelle on Live in the D

🏇 How can you make your own Kentucky Derby hat? The Kentucky Derby is at Churchill Downs this weekend which means it’s time to break out the fancy hats. The pomp and circumstance surrounding this event is legendary and so are the hats and fascinators worn by those who attend every year. We all know they can get elaborate, and they can also get expensive, but you can save and make something remarkable yourself. Tati spoke with a local designer who shared ways you can create your own derby look.

🤝 How much did she win? All week long on Live In The D we are featuring what’s being done in the city to support small businesses because it is National Small Business Week. One program in our city does something big every year to help the entrepreneurs behind these businesses thrive. It’s called Hatch Detroit and it awards $100,000 to a winner of a yearly contest so they can take their business to the next level. This year’s winner joined us in studio this week to share how this will help her, and more about her business that can help take your party to the next level.

From our sponsors and partners

Pure Energy on Live in the D

🏠 It’s that time of year when it’s below 40 degrees on Monday and by the end of the week it’s near 70. Hot, cold, Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind. It can also mean the comfort level inside your home is all over the place as you go from cold to hot and everywhere in between. That’s where our sponsor Pure Energy Window Company can help. Their windows are specially designed to help maintain a temperature in your home that won’t have you constantly cranking the heat or the A/C. They even showed us how their windows can keep the heat out during the hottest days in the summer.

🔨 Speaking of home improvements... We all know that as soon as it gets warm that means it’s time to head outside. Wouldn’t you like to have a space that can withstand Michigan’s relentless weather and requires minimal maintenance. Our sponsor at Lumberjack Home & Building Center wants to help you with the project. If you want a new deck or think your current deck can use an upgrade, they have new Trex decking features that can take your outdoor living space up a notch. They recently joined us in studio to share how it can be done.
