Tati’s ready to stay(cation) instead of get away

May 25, 2023: The Buzz from ‘Live in the D’

Tati has big love for murals in the D. (2020 WDIV)

From Tati Amare – This weekend is the official “unofficial” start of summer: Memorial Day weekend! Barbecues, get-togethers, and fun are always on the list for this three-day weekend, and we’re ready for all this with a weather forecast that couldn’t look more perfect.

It’s time to enjoy the outdoors because this is the best time of year in Michigan, hands down! We often talk about far off locations we’d like to visit, cities on our bucket list, but when the weather is above 50 degrees there’s no reason to leave Detroit (or Michigan, of course) as far as I’m concerned. Everything about our area is electric with excitement ... it’s hard to describe, but when the feeling hits you, it’s unmistakable. This is the time of year when the city comes alive with concerts, activities, events, and the sun doesn’t set until after 9 p.m. What better time to enjoy our beautiful city? I’m sure I’ll see you around!

🚲 The weather is picture perfect outside, and that means it’s a great time to get on your bike and go for a ride. You may have already taken it out of the winter storage, but there are some things you should check before hitting the road or the trail. Michelle Oliver headed to a local bike shop to run through that important checklist to get your bike summer-ready.

🎭 What did this Wolverine say about wearing green? She’s a University of Michigan graduate that is now one of the stars in the national tour of a Tony Award-winning musical. Zan Berube joined us in studio this week to talk about her role as Anne Boleyn in “SIX.” This show is a musical telling, with a little remix, of the six wives of King Henry VIII. The costume Berube wears is all green, which is something that you may not normally find a Michigan alumna wearing. Tati spoke with Berube about the costume, and her excitement to be back in Detroit so close to her college stomping grounds.

🏝️ Ready to feel like you’re in the Pacific? Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is in May, and there’s a way you can feel like you’re traveling without leaving Detroit. A pop-up experience is happening in Hamtramck that’s all about introducing people to Filipino food, if you haven’t experienced it before. The co-founder of Sarap Detroit joined us this week to share the unique flavors that combine to create the Filipino dishes. She also talked about some of the cocktails that are going to be mixed up.

Live in the D: Metroparks Camping

🏕️ If there’s one thing that always goes along with Memorial Day, and summer, it’s camping. Many people hit campsites all over the state all season long, but some others need to ease into the experience. This summer, our sponsor Huron-Clinton Metroparks wants to help you become a camper. This year they are hosting family campout events to welcome everyone to the outdoor adventure.

🍰 Get ready to have your cake and eat it too. Or, in this case, pound cake. Our sponsor Pound Cake Station is making a name for itself with new unique flavors it offers up every month, and people are raving about their perfectly cooked, moist pound cakes. They’re a husband and wife duo who have only been at this professionally for a few years, but they shared what it is that makes their cake creations so special.

Just for fun

🤣 There’s a new comedy out this weekend from the mind of the person The New York Times calls “the hottest comic in America.” Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro are teaming up for “About My Father,” a movie loosely based on Maniscalco’s own experience with his dad. We will talk with him about the movie next week, but for now, watch the trailer and laugh.
