4 things to consider before diving in this summer

The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit shares advice on what you can do to stay water safe

It’s the unofficial start to the summer with Memorial Day weekend, and that means it’s time to start thinking about diving into the pool or lake. Swimming and summer go hand-in-hand, but there are some things to consider before you start splashing around.

Joining “Live In The D” host Tati Amare on the show were Amanda Barone, regional aquatics director, and Latitia Thomas, senior VP of communications and marketing, with YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, to discuss water safety. They offered up four tips for families that include:

  • Wear brightly colored bathing suits so you are visible in the water.
  • Make sure kids always ask permission before entering any body of water.
  • Non-swimmers should always wear a life jacket in or around water.
  • Be vigilant around bodies of water.

When it comes to swimming lessons, Thomas also shared how the YMCA can help anyone from infancy to adulthood.
