A big three-day celebration kicks off in Downtown Detroit in just a couple of days, and you’re invited to enjoy the experience! The Charles H. Wright Museum’s African World Festival is this Friday through Sunday at Hart Plaza, and this year it celebrates its 40th Anniversary!
Producer, poet, author, and performer Jessica Care Moore joined host Tati Amare to share more about what’s going on for the big event.
“It’s family,” Care Moore said. “Thousands of people come out, it’s right off the water.”
Dozens of artists will be setting up shop at Hart Plaza, as well as at food stalls. Vendors will have wares from the continent, including jewelry, clothing and purses.
There are three big stages each offering up performances.
Care Moore will be on the Pyramid Arts Stage on Friday Night accompanied by Somi, Drey Skonie & The Kloudst, Apropos & Gulley-Black Hand Side, Dj Nick Speed, and Sabrina Nelson. Other headliners for the festival include Parliament Funkadelic featuring George Clinton, Mumu Fresh, and Thornetta Davis Anderson.
The festival is partially broken up into villages like the Elder Village or the Wellness Village, where there are performances and activities catering to that subject or group.
“African World Festival is literally a world festival, so it’s for everyone,” says Care Moore.
