Tati Amare – When you think of Spanish food, paella might be the first dish that comes to mind... and with good reason!

Though it’s officially from the town of Valencia, Spain it’s widely considered the official dish of the country. And it’s no surprise that there is a competition to celebrate different version of the savory rice dish with chef’s from all over the world vying for the top spot. Michigan was represented by Aventura, a restaurant specializing in paella and other Spanish dishes based in Ann Arbor for the World Paella Day Cup competition (Paella Day is celebrated on September 20th in Spain).

What did Aventura use for a uniquely American flair? Brisket cooked for hours that was prepared in house and taken with them to the competition in Spain. That’s how serious they were about the ingredients!

Speaking of ingredients, apparently the traditional version is made with chicken and rabbit. This combination of meat was a complete surprise to me as I’ve only had paella with seafood... Chef Raul explained that Valencia is not by the sea, so paella was originally made with ingredients found in the area and it can be made several different ways based on the region it’s being prepared in. I got a little culinary education on “Live in the D” today!

Aventura and Chef Raul’s mid-west twist won them 6th place in the competition and he made it for us in the studio - it was delicious! It had just the right about of traditional flair with a dash of the familiar with the brisket.

📖 How can you get kids to read more? Getting kids to put down their phones and pickup a book is a challenge for many families. Reading is essential for learning and success later in life, so what can you do to spark interest? Don’t think of books the same way you always have. Comic books and graphic novels are ways that kids can find storylines they like and follow them across several books. We spoke with one local owner of a comic book shop who shared some of the stories that are booming with interest.

Mountain Biking at Stoney Creek Metropark on Live In The D (Copyright 2023 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)

🚵 Here’s a way you can get out in nature and try a new experience in Metro Detroit. Our sponsor Huron-Clinton Metropark is hosting a festival this weekend that’s all about mountain biking. It’s happening at a course at Stoney Creek Metropark where you can also try to hit the trails on a mountain bike. April Morton headed out there to check it out and she tried the course herself.

🚗 The North American International Auto Show has come and gone, but you can still get the showroom shine. Our sponsor Pro Image Car Care is responsible for making many of those cars look their best here in Detroit and at other Auto Shows across the nation. We learned how one spray can make all the difference.

Just for fun!

🤣 There is only one comedian in the running to be crowned the season 18 champion of “America’s Got Talent”. If you haven’t seen Ahren Belisle, his edgy comedy and self-deprecating humor will have you laughing and also, maybe, a little uncomfortable.
