How to pick the right glasses for you

There are 4 things you should consider

It’s nearing the end of the year and if you still have money in your account to spend on Health Care items, you might be one of the many looking for new glasses this time of year. So how can you find spectacles that not only fit you but showcase your unique personality? We spoke to Tina Arroyo, the owner of Spectacle Society in Corktown Detroit, to get her advice on what you should consider when picking out a pair of glasses.

Arroyo opened her eyeglass boutique in December of 2020, amidst the pandemic, with help from community groups like Tech Town ProsperUs, and Citizens Bank. As such, she has made it a mission of hers to give back to the community with a variety of fundraisers and charity programs throughout the year.

When it comes to picking out glasses she says there are 4 things to consider.

1. Proportions

Glasses come in a variety of shapes and sizes and an important part of picking the right pair is making sure the glasses are in proportion to your face. Your eyes should be centered in the lenses, if the glasses are too big they may make your eyes look too close-set, whereas a small pair of glasses will have the opposite effect.

2. Prescription

“Not every single frame is going to work for every single prescription,” says Arroyo. For example, if you have a strong prescription, a wire frame might not be able to support your lens, or it might not look good with the thickness of the lens you need. The shape of the lens can also affect how thick it will be with certain prescriptions. It is important to work with an optometrist to find what works best for your needs.

3. Fit

Just like clothing has sizes, so do glasses. Glasses need to sit properly on your face, without sliding down your nose, and without hitting your cheeks, or pinching too hard against the size of your face. If you love a pair of glasses, but they just don’t fit properly, you should always inquire about ways to customize them so they will fit you properly. Opticians like Arroyo can add nose pads, or even lengthen or curve the legs of the glasses to help them fit you perfectly.

4. Tap into the “me” factor

At the end of the day, these glasses are an element of your look so they should fit your style and personality. You can also have multiple frames to fit the different sides of yourself you may want to showcase.
