Pewabic Pottery celebrates 120 years in business

“We’re a part of the fabric of Detroit”

Pewabic is a Detroit institution that is celebrating the milestone of 120 years in our community, and there’s nothing that says Detroit legacy like items from their collection.

Steve McBride, the Executive Director of Pewabic Pottery joined “Live In The D” host Tati Amare and guest-host Jon Jordan to discuss how they plan to celebrate their anniversary.

“We’re a part of the fabric of Detroit,” points out McBride. You can see the company’s tile work all across the city in famous structures like the Guardian Building, the DIA, and even people’s homes.

All year long they have been celebrating 120 years with history talks both online and in person. They have been in the same studio on Jefferson since 1907, making all of their tiles by hand, and you can go there to see them in action. Their collection includes not only tiles, but vases, jewelry, mugs, and other pottery.

What really sets Pewabic apart, however, is their glazing. For their 120th anniversary, they are bringing back their blue iridescent glaze, and for the holiday season, they have a winterberry red glaze.
