She’s a 2-time Academy Award winning designer creating wardrobes for some of Hollywood’s biggest films like “Black Panther”, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, “Malcolm X”, “The Butler”, and “Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing”, just to name a few.
Now Ruth E. Carter is in Detroit, promoting her new book The Art of Ruth E. Carter: Costuming Black History and the Afrofuture, from Do the Right Thing to Black Panther.
Carter stopped by “Live in the D” to chat about what readers can expect. “The part about Malcolm X that you don’t see is I was on the set, at the Pyramids, during his pilgrimage.....that’s a part of my experience with the movie,” Carter said. She said readers will get a “behind the scenes” look at her career which has spanned over 30 years.
Carters book signing and talk takes place Saturday, December 16 at 3 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E. Warren Ave, Detroit.
The Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design exhibition, featuring wardrobes from movies like “Black Panther”, runs through March 31, 2024 at the museum.
