How a senior living center could help your aging loved one

There are signs that could signal it’s time to make a change

As we gather for the holiday season, it’s a great time to check in on relatives who are aging to see if it may be time to make a change in their living situation.

It’s not an easy decision to make, but there are key things you can do to be prepared. Rich Goren, executive director of Fairmont Senior Living in Northville, and Michele White, executive director of Fairmont Senior Living in Farmington Hills, appeared on “Live In The D” to give some advice on what to look for that may help with your decision.

Goren says you need to be proactive to make sure you have an idea of where they should go when your loved one reaches an age when assisted living may be suitable for them.

“This is the time of year when families are reactive because something may happen like a fall or hospitalization,” he said. “So then, when they go to rehab or the hospital, the family is like, ‘We have to find a place now, and we have to find it fast’.”

Also, Goren says to keep an eye on behavior that may seem out of place. You should also make sure you’re listening closely to your loved one’s stories to make sure that everything make sense with what’s happening in their life.

Fairmont Senior Living provides a unique approach to care at their facilities that focuses on a Montessori approach. “It focuses on the residents as individuals,” said White. “We take pride in getting to know our residents and building a personal relationship with them based on the person that they are. Then we use that information to develop a service plan for them. It’s based on their strengths, their interest, and most important their abilities.”
