Liven up your home with plants this winter

ZZ plants could be just what you need

January 10th is National Houseplant Appreciation Day, so it’s the perfect time to add a pop of color to your home with a new plants.

Michael Rodriguez from University Flower Shop in Ann Arbor appeared on “Live In The D” to share some advice for budding plant parents.

Winter is a challenging time to grow house plants, but there are certain plants that are able to survive better in the winter, and lower light situations. Rodriguez suggests getting ZZ plants, which he says do well with limited care and are drought resistant. Another option would be pathos plants.

Rodriguez recommends that beginner plant parents consider options like succulents and cacti. He called them a “go-to beginner” plant. For more experienced plant growers, Rodriguez suggested a spotted begonia or a pitcher plant, which he said will need extra humidity.
