Listen to your heart during American Hearth Month

Doctor shares advice for protecting your heart

February is American Heart Month, which can be the perfect time to take a moment to make sure you’re doing the right things in life to be heart healthy.

Dr. Chadi Alraies, an interventional cardiologist with Detroit Medical Center, appeared on Live In The D to share information about heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, Dr. Alraies said.

The doctor explained that unique heart disease risk factors that women face can include pregnancy complications, polycystic ovary syndrome and hormonal changes that can lead to higher cholesterol and blood pressure.

Dr. Alraies shared that a common misconception is that heart disease only affects older adults. That’s not true, according to the doctor.

Both men and women can make simple lifestyle changes for better heart health, such as having a diet that’s rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, managing stress, being physically active, not smoking and not consuming excessive amounts of alcohol explainedDr. Alraies.

Other ways to have better heart health include maintaining a healthy weight and eliminating processed foods and sugary drinks.
