Decades of style influenced by artists

Iconic hairstyles throughout the decades

As black history month continues, it is important to note that fashion history, is also apart of history. Fashion styles, specifically hairstyles by black artists, have had an influential impact on society.

Local 4 Style Editor, Jon Jordan, appeared on “Live in the D” to talk about iconic hairstyles that have inspired others across different generations.

The first artist Jordan talks about is Josephine Baker. One of the first superstar’s lived in an era where people cut their hair short and she made her own signature ‘the finger wave.’ This hairstyle is still seen today with stars like Missy Elliot, Zendaya, and Madonna wearing it.

Pubic figure, Angela Davis, also had made a statement with her natural afro hair. Many people, like the Jackson 5 then followed this hairstyle.

In the late 70s, Bob Marley and his ‘locs’ became the rage, and they are still popular today. Whoopi Goldberg and Zendaya are two popular figure you may see wearing this hairstyle.

Finally, in the 80s, Grace Jones changed her look and did a ‘flat top’ with a fade side. The ‘fade’ look is still around as we can see some public figures wearing this style today.
