The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan is most known for selling those delicious cookies, but that’s not all the organization does.
April Morton with “Live in the D,” recently spoke with 10-year-old Windsor Polk of Detroit, who said she was recruited to be a Girl Scout because of a special skill she has.
She first gained a love for the game of chess in the first grade, and Windsor said she’s pretty good at it, “I’ve played in tournaments for my team, a lot,” she said.
Now, she’s hoping to improve those skills while helping other young girls gain interest in the sport. In December, 2023, Windsor’s chess coach from the “Detroit City Chess Club,” Kevin Fite, introduced chess to the Girls Scouts of Southeastern Michigan.
They meet once a month at the Girl Scouts Detroit office for a lesson. He said they’re hoping to change some statistics. “I think in the US there’s only 12% of the girls that’s part of the United States Chess Federation,” Fite said. “We’re aiming to change that a little bit at a time.” He said this starts with girls like Windsor.
