Some young designers recently brought their talents and some Detroit flair to New York Fashion Week.
Zyana, Lydia, and Ta’Leah are three young students who took their creations to New York. The theme of their designs was Afrofuturism.
15-year-old Lydia said her designs were based on her friends and people around her. She said she wanted to emphasis mental health and self-esteem in teenagers. Lydia explained that she focused on her favorite insect, which is a butterfly, and how they go through metamorphosis. Lydia wanted to highlight how people change in their daily lives. Ta’Leah explained that her designs showcase her love for storytelling. Meanwhile, Zyana’s brand is about versatility and transitional wear. She described the experience of being part of New York Fashion Week as “lifechanging.”
The young designers are part of the Industry Club, which is a workforce program provided by the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan. The program allows young people to get paid to learn skills in various industries, such a fashion.
