A Barrier-Breaking Supermodel from Detroit

As we celebrate Black History Month, Local 4 Style Editor Jon Jordan turned back the pages of fashion magazines past to find the trailblazing Black models who paved the way for today’s fashion icons.  While Beverly Johnson is known as the first African American model to appear on the cover of Vogue, that’s really only half right.  Model Donyale Luna was born and raised in Detroit, and appeared on the cover of British Vogue in 1966, nearly a decade before Johnson did.

Jordan continued his fashion timeline with Iman, who started her own cosmetic company designed for women of color.  He mentioned another Detroit-born supermodel and friend-of-Live-in-the-D Veronica Webb, and model Tyson Beckford who both earned contracts with global beauty and fashion companies.
