Helping people heal with laughter

Detroit woman uses her health challenges to create smiles for others facing their own

Detroit comedian Crystal Clyear is so hilarious she brings the audience to tears, but a potential life threatening diagnosis she received in 2023 brought her to tears and she said she was devastated.

“This disease, Pulmonary Hypertension, is very rare,” Clyear said.

According to medical studies the disease affects about 1% of people globally. The disorder makes the heart work harder than normal to pump blood into the lungs, and treating it, has altered Clyear’s life. “I have this infusion in my chest. It helps the veins in my heart to open up the vessels so I can breathe better,” she said.

The illness, she said, has not only changed her physically, due to having to wear visible tubes, but she discovered something during her time in the hospital.

“I made the nurses laugh, everybody, and that’s what people there need,” she said.

During this time, she started taking a comedy class in Detroit where she met fellow Detroit comedian True Love Sharms P. The two ladies had a lot in common, both were dealing with health challenges, but both were also determined not to let their circumstances get in the way of their happiness or the happiness of others.

The ladies decided to start a comedy tour called “The Healthcare Comedy Tour”, and for the past few months they have been lifting the spirts of those in nursing homes, medical facilities, and other venues throughout the city.

Clyear said comedy saved her life and laugher truly is the best medicine.
