Planting and pruning a retirement landscape

Just like your garden, your retirement nest egg needs different things to help it grow

It’s that time of year when we all start to think about the landscaping around our homes. From the lawn, to the trees, to the flower beds, a lot goes into maintaining the area outside out homes.

The same can be said when you think about your retirement landscape. You want to make sure you’re planting seeds to make you financial nest egg grow. Tom Jacobs, founder of Jacobs Financial Services, and Terri DeBoer, Director of Communications for Jacobs Financial Services, appeared on “Live In The D” to share some advice about your retirement.

Just like your garden, you want to have a variety of things in you retirement landscape. A garden needs things like trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals to be diverse and look its best. When it comes to planting a financial landscape think of having a variety as well. Things like Social Security, 401K, IRAs and fixed annual annuities can all help your retirement look its best.

“For most of our clients, they want to have a mix,” said Jacobs. “They want to have a garden of investments that all blossom at different times, creating an unlimited income that can absolutely never go away.”

In your garden you also have to watch for weeds, which is something you need to do in retirement as well so you don’t end up losing money to bad situations. The financial weeds Jacobs wants you to watch for are:

  • Procrastination
  • Investing that’s hard to control
  • Losing value on your money

Pruning is also very important when it comes to a landscape, but how do you prune a financial landscape? To see the advice that Jacobs Financial Services had click the video player above.
