From Derby celebrations to a new museum exhibit, lots happening this weekend

Something for just about everyone this weekend in Metro Detroit

We’re heading into the first weekend in May, so along with the warmer temps, there are a few events happening, for just about everyone.

First up, the Grosse Pointe Theatre presents a performance of Disney’s “Newsies” the musical. The production is described as powerful, inspiring, joyful, and entertaining, with a timeless message of justice and fairness. The musical is plays today through May 12 at the Parcells school auditorium in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Next, Detroit is known for having amazing museums, and on Saturday the Detroit Historical Museum will offer free admission to celebrate a new exhibition. “Kresge at 100: A Century of Impact, A Future of Opportunity” will make its debut. The exhibition will detail the 100 year history of the Kresge Foundation and is spread out in two galleries. The event is Saturday at the museum in Detroit.

This weekend is the Kentucky Derby, and there will be celebrations throughout Metro Detroit including one at all Hamlin Pub locations. The restaurants will feature festive food and drink menus, like Kentucky deviled eggs, Kentucky Mules, and more. The Derby will show on several big-screen TV’s and of course guests are encouraged to wear their most unique derby attire.
