Get your sweet tooth ready because a new bakery is coming to Detroit, and it will share a taste of Filipino culture.
Jonathan Peregrino is the man behind JP Makes and Bakes. He explained that it all started with his love for food and sweets and wanting to bring his heritage to Detroit. JP ended up going to the Philippines for pastry school. His journey as a small business owner led him to the Hatch Detroit competition where he was a semifinalist in 2023.
Now JP is getting ready to open a brick-and-mortar location in Detroit’s New Center area where he’s slated to start sharing his sweets this summer.
JP shared that he likes to focus on traditional Filipino items, such as the cassava cake. “Then I like to focus on Filipino flavors in a familiar format, so I use ube, which is a purple yam or purple sweet potato very prevalent in the Philippines. I use that in cake, brownies, macarons, and cookies,” JP said. He also makes items that are just tasty and that he loves, like chocolate chip cookies.
