Enjoying food safely this summer

Make sure what your cooking doesn’t spoil the summer fun

Memorial Day weekend is approaching, and the grills are coming out, but how can we avoid cross contamination this summer while enjoying our cookout? Registered dietitian Sayde Beele came on “Live in the D” to explain how people can enjoy their meals in a safe way.

The first thing everyone should be doing is washing their hands. Beele emphasized how important this is in eliminating cross contamination. For those that don’t know what cross contamination is, Beele explained it as “The transfer of bacteria from raw food juices or uncleaned utensils that touches cooked food as well as ready to eat food,” said Beele.

She then explained that cleaning your grill should be people’s next priority. Cleaning your grill means that food debris is removed which limits bacteria exposure.

Beele also made sure to note that using separate plates and utensils between raw and cooked food will allow food to remain uncontaminated. Storing raw meat separate from each other in a refrigerator 40°F or less is the way it should be stored, she explained.

The last thing Beele explained was for people to have separate cutting boards for raw meat and produce. It’s important for everyone to wash and sanitize their cutting boards after they’re done using it.
