What you should know before bringing home a new pet

Taco is looking for a loving home

Pets can often become members of the family. Whether the pet is a dog, cat, fish, or rabbit there are plenty of things pet owners can do to prepare for the arrival of their new family member.

Ann-Marie Chamberlain of the Michigan Humane Society stopped by “Live in the D” to talk about what people should know before bringing home a new pet. She explained that the biggest thing upcoming pet owners can do is set themselves up for success ahead of time. This can be done by purchasing initial pet supplies such as bowls, crates, leashes, or food. Chamberlain also suggested the following:

  • Set aside a designated space for your pet. Pets need a calm place to call their own.
  • The first couple of days the pet arrives to their new home they need to stay relaxed.
  • Be patient with your new pet. They will need time to acclimate to their new space.

Chamberlain brought a dog with her on the show named Taco. Taco is currently up for adoption and the Mike Morse Law Firm will pay the standard adoption fee for anyone who adopts today’s pet of the week.
