From a restaurant’s kitchen to yours

App now available in Detroit will connect people to food that may otherwise be thrown out

It’s no secret that restaurants have a ton of food that’s used to prepare meals, but we also know that not all of that food always ends up on a table in front of a customer. Now, an app that will be available in Detroit starting this week looks to curb that food waste and deliver unused food and ingredients at a discounted cost. The app is called Too Good To Go and Katy Knoer, the owner of Give Thanks Bakery, appeared on “Live In The D” to share why she partnered with the app and how it works.

Using the app is pretty simple. You select the restaurant where you want to purchase from and then you pick a surprise bag. The bag is then made available for pickup during a specific time window at the end of the day. The reason it’s called a surprise bag is that the same items will not always be available. “It’s good for the restaurant,” said Knoer. “You can simply evaluate what you have left at the end of the day and make it available to public for purchase at a really affordable price.”

Knoer shared an example of what one of her surprise bags with Too Good To Go may look like, depending on what’s left over. In the bag was cranberry walnut sourdough bread, a large Bavarian pretzel, and an almond croissant.

“We have a real commitment to a waste-free existence. That is really hard to do,” said Knoer. “But, this is really special because it allows greater accessibility to our finished products.”
